Richmond County Republican Committee Opposes SPLOST Renewal, Urges Residents to Vote NO
Augusta, GA – Sherry Barnes, Chairman of the Richmond County Republican Committee, today released the following statement regarding the proposal to renew the one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) for Augusta-Richmond County:
“While SPLOST provides funding for important projects that enhance the lives of the citizens of Richmond County, the irresponsible execution of past SPLOST referendums prohibits the Richmond County Republican Committee from supporting any future SPLOST referendums at this time. We strongly urge Richmond County residents to vote NO to this tax.
“The inability of the Richmond County Commissioners to work together to complete approved SPLOST referendums, most recently demonstrated by the controversy surrounding the TEE Center, is unacceptable. It is incumbent upon us as citizens of Richmond County to hold our elected officials responsible and to demand that they engage in constructive and civil discussions as they lead our county forward.
“Until problems related to current projects are resolved, it is the Richmond County Republican Committee’s position to oppose this SPLOST referendum on June 16th. Furthermore, we ask all Richmond County Commissioners to work together to complete the projects begun by past SPLOST referendums before submitting a new SPLOST referendum for the citizens of Richmond County to vote on next year.”
